Tummy Time

Jonah is now 1 week and 3 days old. He's got an unparalleled kung-fu grip, and has the cutest yawn I've ever seen. He also seems to be settling into a regular routine; he'll typically eat for about 30 minutes and sleep for 2-3 hours.

Erica is going great, too. She's making a somewhat speedy recovery from her C-section, and has been absolutely awesome with our little guy. When I've got to teach relatively early, she takes night duty and hasn't complained once (okay, maybe once, but I don't think she has twice).

Today was our first attempt at giving Jonah some "tummy time." The following video documents this occurrence.

Jonah Has Landed!

After a crazy couple of days, Jonah Allen Flowers is here. I'll go into detail later about why his delivery took as long as it did, but in the meantime I've put together a brief video that documents his entrance into this world.

He was born at 2:22 AM on October 3, and weighed 8lbs. 5 oz. Oh, did I mention that he's really, really ridiculously good-looking?

Stay tuned for more video of our son and his uber-cute scrunchie-faces!

Update!

UPDATE: Erica is at 3-4 cm, and has received the epidural. She's got oxygen, too. I may have called her "Darth Vader" in jest. Bad move.

Induction is Imminent!

It's 6:38 AM, and Erica will be induced around 7 or 7:30. The medication she was given last night did its job well, so everyone is ready to get this party started.

It was very comforting dozing to the sound of Jonah's heartbeat all night. Two or three different nurses checked in on E every couple of hours or so, and the sound of random doors opening and closing caused me to wake up every thirty minutes or so. Of course, what's important is that the mommy-to-be got some sleep. Apparently Ambien is some potent stuff.

Once the induction is underway, I'll be sure to post another update. Stay tuned for pictures, too!

B-DAY

Okay, so I suppose "B-DAY" is most commonly associated with "Birthday," but I'm labeling it "BABY DAY" (though I suppose the former is also appropriate).

We're nearing the end of our pregnancy, and Jonah is packing on the pounds. At our last doctor's visit, he had an estimated weight of exactly 8 lbs. According to the good people at Carolinas Women's Center, he could weigh more, but he could also weigh less. As guestimates go, however, he's in the 88th percentile for weight, and he has an awesome Buddha belly. Given that we're at 38 (coming up on 39) weeks, what does all of this mean? Will he simply continue to strive for Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man proportions and enter the world an unrivaled behemoth?

As it turns out, inducing labor is an option that might best suit our situation. We certainly could wait until the 40--or 41--week mark comes along, but our doctor has emphasized that Jonah is simply getting fatter at this point. To reduce the chances of Erica needing a C-section, we're seriously considering getting the ball rolling this coming Friday. And when I say seriously, I'd wager there's a 90% chance it'll happen (unless Erica goes into labor at some point before this coming weekend).

After a long, exciting nine months (or so), we're almost there, and we couldn't be more thrilled. Erica says she isn't nervous about the actual delivery--really, her anxiety is centered on making sure we have everything prepared at work and at home for our little boy's arrival.

Also, I promise to do my best to upload photos/video when I'm able. To be perfectly honest, though, I'm looking forward to spending the weekend with my wife, my son, and our extended family, so media associated with Jonah's birth might be delayed until Monday or Tuesday sometime.

That's it for now. Please pray for us over the course of this coming week (and, of course, weekend), and I'll certainly keep everyone updated on the status of the delivery!

3 Weeks and Counting...

This past Friday, we had our usual check-up with the doctor to see how Jonah is coming along. He's doing great--in fact, it looks like he's going to be a fairly sizable baby (at our last appointment, the ultrasound tech. estimated his weight at 6 lbs, 6 ozs.). Erica is currently measuring at 40 weeks, and we're scheduled to have another ultrasound this coming Friday so the docs can gauge how much weight he's put on. If the little tike gets too much bigger, it's look a C-section will be in the cards. We're both totally fine with that: our prayer is that he's delivered quickly and safely (whatever that might look like).

The nursery is pretty much finished. Of course, I had to hang a Star Wars poster in there to give it the necessary "nerd" flair that my room had when I was a kid. I'm sure Jonah will appreciate it when he gets older.

I've also bought him Season 1 of "The Clone Wars." I may have already watched it, though.

35 Week Ultrasound

I know the lighting in this video is terrible, but at least you can enjoy the conversation and watching Jonah squirm around on the ultrasound monitor.

Also, our son currently weighs 6.5 lbs. I think it's safe to say that he'll be pretty big by the due date.

Back to School

Classes for the Fall semester have started at CPCC, and so far it's been an enjoyable week of meeting students and getting them acquainted with the requirements of my classes. Pretty soon I'll be starting a marathon of paper grading, so I'm trying to soak up the "calm before the storm."

Erica is doing great, and today is at the 33 week benchmark. Jonah's getting noticeably large; when he moves, it tends to make E uncomfortable because of the lack of room, and it looks like his head (or maybe his rear end? or some other protuberance?) is stuck on one side of her abdomen. It's extraordinarily cool--and, in many ways, extraordinarily creepy--to see him wiggle around. The nursery is pretty much finished, and he's got enough clothes to last 'til he's at least two years old.

I still have to buy him a "Barf Vader" t-shirt, though. It's a necessity.

Free Pizza (Make That Three Free Pizzas)

Donatos was giving out free pizza today. All you had to do was show-up at any one of their convenient locations and show that you have their phone number stored in your mobile device. Apparently the word was spread fairly quickly, as there was a sizable line waiting to get inside. Still, I braved the heat and left with a medium cheese pizza for no cost.

Erica had to one-up me, though. On the way home, she visited three different Donatos (yes, she walked away with three free pizzas). She was quite proud of herself.

Here's some other exciting news: I've been hired on as a full-time instructor at CPCC! This is a huge blessing for our family, and I'm excited about beginning my career with a college that seems to really respect and appreciate its teachers.

The missus has another doctor appointment this coming Thursday, so I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on Jonah's progress. In 8 weeks (or thereabouts), our son will be entering the world.

The Water's Fine

Rain Drenching the Shoreline

Sting Rays Under the Surf City Pier
(They're kind of hard to see: look for the small gray discs in the middle of the picture)

Here are some pictures from the beach trip Erica and I made this past week. We were in Surf City, and the weather was great (though the first day was overcast and generally uncooperative); I also had just enough time to go offshore fishing with my dad and new brother-in-law. The only thing we caught was a two-foot long sand shark, but being on the water was relaxing.

I've got oodles of things to share in the coming days: for now, though, I'm going to enjoy this thunderstorm that's starting to bulldoze the Charlotte area.

And, you know, I don't want to get fried by lightning while writing a blog.

Oh, I almost forgot: happy birthday to Al Cousen! I think he's like 84, or so.

20 Week Ultrasound

And just in case you missed it...

A Pregnancy Slideshow

I've put together a slideshow that contains the bulk of the pregnancy pictures up until this point. I still have a few more to add, but this is a good start.

Enjoy!

Swedish Meatballs Make Me Sick

Erica, Jessica, Chris (Daniels) and myself went to IKEA today to get a few organizational items for the nursery, and my pre-shopping meal has not settled well. I suppose that's what I get for scarfing down a $2.99 meatball dinner.

On the bright side, we did pick up some nifty shelves.

In related news, Erica is at 30 weeks now! Jonah's kicking all the time, and he occasionally wakes up the wifey in the middle of the night.

That's it for now. I'm going to take a few more Tums and maybe watch Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

Nuke the fridge, baby.

Excuse Me, I Just Blogged

Hello, peoples and entities of the Interwebz--

Facebook can be a great tool, but, in many ways, it's also a genuine headache that's awfully tough to escape. Because of a strong belief on my part that I'm entirely more productive when I'm removed from the distractions associated with said social network, I've decided to cut myself off (temporarily, at least) from the House that Zuckerberg built. "Idleness" is the word of the day: for me, Matthew 18:9 comes to mind.

I might also have a little paranoia about Big Brother (the government, not the show), but that's an entirely different matter.

Blogs, it seems, could be a much more efficient--and, perhaps, more genuine--way for yours truly to communicate what's happening in the life of myself, Erica, and our soon-to-be-born son. We're excited about the adventure God has planned for us as parents, and we'll be sharing the insights we learn about being a mom and dad with y'all along the way (I'm sure we'll be asking a lot of questions, too).

So, if you're one of our friends or simply want to be kept abreast as to what's happening with the Flowers family, be sure to tune into on a regular basis.

And just in case you're wondering, I'm planning on keeping the movie reviews coming on a weekly basis, too. Yeah, I know you were holding your breath.
